On 14 March 2023, the UK Medicines regulator approved an application to reclassify the steroid inhaler Ventolin (puffer) from a generic medicine sold by a pharmacy under the brand name Saleroff. This review will look at reliever inhalers marketed by pharmaceutical companies who will be able to apply for the product reclassification under the brand name. In this case reliever inhalers will be products that are brand name asthma control inhalers and will have a'saler action' of less than 2% of the dose and will therefore be unsuitable for sale to a person under the age of 18 years.
Ventolin was the first generic inhaler to be approved for sale in the UK. The application was made in April 2020, after a study revealed that saleroff inhalers were more likely to cause bronchospasm than Ventolin. The asthma control products sold under the brand name are Saleroff, Ventolin Evohaler and Bronchospasm Inhaler. The asthma inhaler Ventolin Evohaler is only available in two strengths: 25mg and 100mg. Saleroff is only available in two strengths: 25mg and 100mg.
Ventolin is available as an aerosol inhaler, which contains the active ingredient salbutamol. Salbutamol inhalers produce bronchodilation by relaxing the muscles in the airways and providing an inhaler for use during an asthma attack. Ventolin Evohaler is only available in two strengths: 25mg and 100mg. The asthma inhaler Saleroff is only available in two strengths: 25mg and 100mg.
The application for the product reclassification under the brand name has been delayed until 14 March 2023. The application will be reviewed by the MHRA who will be making recommendations on when reliever inhalers should be sold.
The benefits of taking Saleroff in person will not outweigh the potential risks.
The applications are made in several ways.
Those who have had an inhaler prescribed by a pharmacist or doctor and have been using reliever inhalers for at least four straight days is a person under 18 years of age. Those who have used Saleroff for at least two weeks without a prescription are not eligible for the product reclassification under the brand name.
Those who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding are not allowed under the product reclassification.
Those with asthma who are taking a medicine that contains salbutamol (asthma control) or other bronchodilators (such as doxazosin) are not allowed to use reliever inhalers.
Those who have a known allergy to salbutamol or other bronchodilators will not qualify for the product reclassification under the brand name.
Those who have had a saleroff inhaler for more than six straight days are not eligible for the product reclassification under the brand name.
Those who have been prescribed corticosteroids for their asthma are not eligible for the product reclassification under the brand name.
Those with liver problems who have started treatment with salbutamol inhalers have not been allowed to use reliever inhalers.
Those with kidney problems who are on dialysis are not allowed to use salbutamol inhalers.
Those who have had a drug interaction with salbutamol inhalers are not eligible for the reclassification under the brand name.

What is Asthma?
Asthma is a common lung condition that causes occasional breathing difficulties.
It affects people of all ages and often starts in childhood, although it can also develop for the first time in adults.
There’s currently no cure, but there are simple treatments that can help keep the symptoms under control so it doesn’t have a big impact on your life.
Symptoms
The main symptoms of asthma are:
● Wheezing (a whistling sound when breathing) ● Breathlessness ● A tight chest, which may feel like a band is tightening around it ● Coughing
The symptoms can sometimes get temporarily worse. This is known as an asthma attack.
Several conditions can cause similar symptoms, so it’s important to get a proper diagnosis and correct treatment.
Your GP will usually be able to diagnose asthma by asking about symptoms and carrying out some simple tests.
Treatments
The main types are:
● Reliever inhalers – used when needed to quickly relieve asthma symptoms (salbutamol) ● Preventer inhalers (steroid) – used every day to prevent asthma symptoms occurring ● Some people also need to take tablets.
Causes and triggers
Asthma is caused by swelling (inflammation) of the breathing tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. This makes the tubes highly sensitive, so they temporarily narrow.
It may occur randomly or after exposure to a trigger. Common asthma triggers include:
● Allergies – to house dust mites, animal fur or pollen, for example ● Smoke, pollution and cold air ● Exercise ● Infections like colds or flu ● Identifying and avoiding your asthma triggers can help you keep your symptoms under control
Side Effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. The following side effects may happen with this medicine:
Allergic Reactions (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people)
If you have an allergic reaction, stop taking Ventolin Evohaler and see a doctor straight away.

This is usually harmless, and usually stops after you have used the medicine for a while. You may feel your heartbeat is uneven or it gives an extra beat, these may affect up to 1 in 10 people.
Tell your doctor if you have any of the following side effects which may also happen with this medicine:
Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people)

This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you have any further questions about your medicines, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Ventolin is a bronchodilator, a type of inhaler used for treating respiratory conditions like asthma and other breathing difficulties.
Ventolin is a bronchodilator that can be used to treat asthma and other respiratory problems.
Ventolin is available in two different doses: 100mg and 200mg.
The 200mg dose is more effective in relieving symptoms of a variety of respiratory problems, and the higher the dose, the more effective it is.
Ventolin is also available in a different form, called a nebulizer. Nebulizer medications are the liquid form that the drug is inhaled into a device that makes the inhaler act more slowly.
If you’re taking a dose of 200mg, the dose you’ll need to inhale for 15 minutes before the inhaler releases the medication.
If you need to use the nebulizer, you should expect to inhale the drug for as long as it needs to be inhaled.
The maximum dose that you can expect to take for this type of medication is 200mg. However, you may find that the amount of liquid that you can take at a time that’s right for you to use is less than the amount that you’re prescribed.
You should also expect to get a dose of the medication in a single dose.
If you’re using a nebulizer, you should expect to get a dose of the drug for as long as it needs to be inhaled.
The dose of the drug will vary depending on the patient. The maximum dose you’ll need to take for this type of medication is 100mg.
You should not be taking 200mg of the medicine if you’re also taking a 100mg dose. If you’re taking the 200mg dose, you should expect to get a dose of the drug for as long as it’s needed.
If you’re also taking a 100mg dose, the maximum dose you’ll need to take is 200mg.

Ventolin is commonly prescribed as an aerosol inhalant administered through an inhaler. For most individuals, two inhalations should be taken every four to six hours. This usually comes out to about two inhalations four times a day. More frequent inhalations are not recommended.
To prevent exercise-induced bronchospasms, it is recommended that you take two inhalations of Ventolin fifteen minutes before physical activity.
The exact dosage and schedule will vary depending on the patient's age, body weight, and severity of the condition. Take the medication exactly as your doctor has instructed.
Do not increase your dosage or discontinue the use of Ventolin unless ordered to do so by your doctor. If you experience any adverse reactions, contact a health care provider. Your dosage may increase or decrease depending on your doctor’s orders.
You should store your medication in a closed container at room temperature, away from extreme heat, extreme cold, moisture, and direct light, and keep it out of the reach of children.
